Rev. Matt J. Pennington grew up in Lake Jackson, Texas where he answered God’s call to ministry during Jr. High. He earned a Bachelors in Applied Sociology and Leadership Studies from Texas State University-San Marcos. Pastor Matt feels that his greatest accomplishment of his collegiate career was meeting and marrying his best friend, Brooke. Matt earned a Master of Divinity from Asbury Theological Seminary, where he served as Vice President of the student body. He is currently one third of the way through a three year journey to earn a Doctor of Ministry focused on Preaching and Leadership at the Beeson International Center for Biblical Preaching and Church Leadership at Asbury Theological Seminary.
Pastor Matt comes to Gonzales from St. John’s UMC in Corpus Christi where he has served for the past four years as Executive Pastor. He has served as Senior Pastor of First UMC Bronte as well as in youth and college ministries in San Marcos, New Braunfels, and San Antonio. He loves Jesus, God’s Word, and leading the church with passion. He also loves to fish, hunt, and pretty much anything else outdoors. Matt and Brooke have three amazing children: two sons, ages 10 and 6, and a 4 year old daughter. Brooke is a Pediatric Speech-Language Pathologist, and Pastor Matt says she is the light of his life.
